How do we avoid the fate of the boiled frog?
When do the rules change?
In a football game, it is the two-minute warning. In investing it might be when the closing price of a stock drops below the 40-week-moving-average price or when quarterly revenues drop across a multitude of industries.
This is an intensely personal issue. Everybody will have a different answer. The most important thing is that you indelibly mark the "trigger looks like" into your brain because there will not be balloons and trumpets marking the occasion.
Everybody will have a different profile of "immediate actions" that will be their primary response. The ardent pacifist might purchase a gun. The miser might drain most of his money out of his IRA. The city-slicker might buy property and pick up a shovel and start a garden.
A few scenarios
For one person, the trigger came close when the Canadian media reported hundreds of mass-graves near schools that taught First Nations (Native American) children. The Brownshirt-thugs responded by fire-bombing churches across western Canada. The only thing lacking for that person was that the Brownshirts were not hunting and executing clergy.
A few key points:
- Fire is potentially a weapon of mass destruction and in urban areas or areas where conifers or tall grass grows (like western Canada), can rage uncontrollably.
- Churches/temples/mosques were traditionally neutral areas that were not targeted. They were granted the status of sanctuary.
- The information was twisted by the media. The academic findings were "anomalies in ground penetrating radar returns" which can be rotting roots, marmot dens or a host of other changes in soil density.
A second scenario (that I am totally making up) involves somebody who is attacked but successfully fends off their attacker. He reports it to the police.
Scenario 2.0 has the police being professional. Collecting information. Ensuring that the person who was attacked receives medical care. Providing feedback about the investigation to the victim. Maybe recovering some of the property. Promptly supplying the victim's insurance company with photos/evidence and police reports.
Scenario 2.1 has the police tossing the victim in jail for fighting back and harming the local entrepreneur who was just trying to make a living via small-scale wealth distribution. Medical attention is not provided in the jail. Cooperation with the insurance company is stonewalled.
A third scenario might be some arbitrary rate of inflation over a period of six months. What happens if prices across a broad market-basket of goods goes up by 25% over a period of 6 months? It might be bad for people on fixed incomes. It might be bad for normal people living near folks who depend on entitlements for their Doritos and Mountain Dew and suddenly their EBIT amount doesn't cover their needs.
A fourth scenario might be when random attacks at gas stations in certain areas become a regular occurrence. Maybe thugs demand protection money and bust your windshield if you don't cough it up. That would quickly make the areas where that behavior tolerated a NOGO zone. Incidentally, that has been happening in parts of Chicago for more than 25 years. Dudes start washing your windshield and then demand payment.
A fifth scenario might be when the thugs declare open-season on first repsonders.
What Mrs ERJ and I are doing
We are intentionally becoming more local. We stopped donating to "national" and "international" causes. Vacations are closer to home. I am considering a dentist who is more local.
We are battening down the hatches in the house. Last summer we had a contractor renovate a bathroom to make it senior-citizen friendly. This summer we replaced our 1977 oil furnace and air conditioner with more efficient units.
We are ruthlessly culling out plants that are not paying their rent. For example, I will be removing almost all of the grapevines growing on the trellis between the rows of fruit trees. They don't produce enough grapes to justify the complications the create.
We are also culling books. Some books are a waste of paper and a waste of storage space. Like the grapevines, I have an emotional attachment to some of those books but priorities change over time.
A big one for me is to organize my tools and prioritizing putting things away right after I use them. I am getting more absent-minded as I age and I need to invest in tool-box infrastructure. A tool is infinitely more valuable when you spend less than five minutes between thinking "I need my carbide-tipped, metric gonculator" to having it in your hands vs. when you have to hunt two weeks before finding it.
A parting thought
The best time to plan is any time before the bullets are whistling over your head.
It doesn't have to be a great plan but it does have to be simple to execute. Fine motor skills and the ability to process nuance turn to crap under stress. If-Then-Else sign-posts must be clear.
A quote that has been attributed to Col. Jeff Cooper "We will not rise to the challenge. Rather, we will regress to the highest level of training that we have mastered."
So, decide what skills you need to master. Get the appropriate tools. Make a plan. Work the plan. Tweak the plan as you get boots-on-the-ground experience.
There will probably be a Part II to this post.

Are you interested in suggestions towards your boiling frog preps?
ReplyDeleteFor example, having a Chaos kit and SOP for breaking windows -odd sounds during the night.
Michael the anonymous today
Yes. I am interested in what other people are thinking and what you are doing.
DeleteThat's a good point. a half-sheet of plywood is 15 bucks, roll of plastic construction material another 20 maybe... but priceless in the event something unwanted comes through a piece of glass.
DeleteA "mostly peaceful" flaming bottle of gasoline against the wall of your house is a problem.
DeleteOne INSIDE your house is a REAL PROBLEM.
I made up a kit of pre-cut welded rabbit wire window covers and for all my windows. As my wife isn't fond of the Mad Max look, they stand ready. Included in the Hardening Kit is all those precut and checked wire mesh, the screws and washers needed (plus extras) and a ready with two rotating recharged battery's for the drill.
GLOVES plus extras as wire will cut you and a head light for hands free installation,
Also inside the kit is HD black plastic sheeting, scissors, duct tape for black out as needed.
As Doors are also weak points the standard improvement is solid core doors and reenforcing the hinges with 3 inch screws. A inside the house leaning door jamb is useful.
Getting long will do another
Michael
Kits are to prevent you from searching the whole house LOOKING for something in a hurried situation.
The Midnight CRASH Kit-SOP
DeleteIt's been getting weird out there. Somebody had a violent robbery last week.
You awaken to a crash in the living room during a snowstorm. Per your practiced SOP both of you slip on standby clothing to include SHOES (cut feet from glass is Bad) both with personal weapons, she secures the kids in the agreed room and you investigate.
Happily, it's just a tree limb through the window. You grab the chaos kit: Head lamp, GLOVES, hammer, sheet plastic, strips and roofing tacks to cover the window and keep snow out and precious HEAT in. You use a strong flashlight to find broken glass and put them inside the Contractor Grade Black plastic bags. You use Blue Painters tape to gather up more.
Powers out so you grab your solar "generator" and plug in the vacuum cleaner for more cleaning as again broken glass cutting you as you sit down in your chair is BAD.
No Solar generator make plans to remove carpeting and lose fabric seating. Post craziness is a BAD time for misc. cuts from broken glass.
Also, a decent sized one that will power a vacuum will recharge your cordless drills and cell phones easily. My wife's CPAP unit will not power a vacuum as I tested it.
A 200 watt solar panel (or better) is amazingly capable of recharging it in good sunshine. Also cheap.
ALWAYS TEST your plans.

I will second the need for a plug-and-play source of electrical power, even if you have a generator in the shed.
DeleteRolling-blackouts are a high-probability even in a lot of "scripts" for a reason. For me, the most compelling reason is history. Stuff happens. Grid managers shed load.
Last one for now.
DeleteWhy a Generator AND a Solar Generator?
Like a diesel sub you can easily recharge a solar generator in less than an hour to run smaller loads while saving gasoline.
I tested mine and the fuel use is almost the same powering a few lights and a fridge as with a full max load including electric oil filled heaters.
Why not run the generator full time?
OR HOW TO DRAW UNWANTED ATTENTION.
What draws trouble when the lights are out? LIGHTS (I can see lights across my valley, and they are not big lights, windows with closed curtains), Generator sounds and the proverbial "I'll BBQ my meat" as not to waste them when powers out.
Ways to make a generator quieter. Replace the cheap muffler with an automobile muffler. Put generator on a rubber work mat. Vibration drumming is loud. Build a straw bale wall around the generator, CAREFUL as to make it far enough away to keep the hot parts from burning the straw and airflow to keep the unit cool. Open topped is fine.

People - get real. No matter your preps, the ones coming after you/your stuff have no hesitation about taking what they want - they are very most likely a better predator that you. No matter your preps, you cannot be on red alert 24 hours/day. Survival of the upheaval depends on how much you can debase your civilized core and become as effective (meaning: ruthless, witout moral compass) a predator as the ones circling your carefully prepared shelter.
DeleteTo Anony: White-tailed deer are stupid animals. Humans are smart. Only 1/3 of the humans go home with venison. Why?
DeleteBecause the deer know the territory and can sense when a sound is "off". The human is bumbling around without a clue.
Those super-predators you are throwing your hands up in despair about? They aren't bullet-proof and they are not (for the most part) on their home turf. They will get a lot more timid when 5% of them get mowed down every night.
Agreed - they are a problem, but far less so after a firm response and when there are only a few of them.
DeleteThat is why choosing your location is important.
Also, the more notice you can get, the better. An ideal place is set back from the road, with a gate and sensors fare enough from the house that you can be ready for them.
Obviously everyone can't do this, but the closer you can get, the better. And knowing your neighbors is a big help too.
Jonathan
Goodness Anon Oct 11th 10:05 aren't you a font of good news.
DeleteHave you ever pondered how Humans have been dealing with other Human Predators for AH About 2000 years or so.
And so far, we've NOT had to toss all of Civilization aside to do it?
There WILL ALWAYS be a scenario that you cannot defend against. An Armored platoon intent on eliminating you and yours for example.
Plenty of lesser evils and sneaky Pete's to deal with in all bad times scenarios.
There is this thing called logistics. Every day a solder (Predator) in the field requires around 1-3 gallons of SAFE Drinking water. Bad water or no water you're not very functional in 2 days, near death or wishing for it on the third. Theres this little thing about a Leadership that MUST provide daily or revolts and new leadership occurs over some dead thugs.
Theres this funny thing about folks shooting back. Even a torso hit-groin hit with a mere 22 without surgery is a slow death issue.
Funny how few bandits in the "Wild West" ever thrived more than a few months of serious activity before wound s and leadership failure shut them down.
YES, a Golden Horde scenario is a PROBLEM. Best to be less noticeable to them thus blackout curtains and quieting generators UNTILL they BURN OUT.
Most of your troubles will come from folks within 20 miles of you. Even the sweetest Grandma will steal and kill if her Grandchild is crying "I'M HUNGRY".
So, know your neighbors and be known as the fellow that helps, not that opinioned "Patriot" that says, "screw all of you when the lights go out".
I have hit the same conclusion after a loss this week. Preventable.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I love reading your blog, Joe.
ReplyDeleteThe video's on ZH and twatbook of the protests in Paris this weekend should open up any eyes that are still shut. They won't, but they should.
Inflation, in my opinion. Even if you are not in any areas where any of violence is happening, inflation is everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI went to the grocery store yesterday. This is a step up from the budget grocery store but not a "living well" sort of store. I spent $40 for 10 items, including a gallon of milk, produce, and a small bag of rye flour.
"intensely personal"
ReplyDelete"the rules change" when you get desperate. The "brave penguin" is the hungry penguin. For most I suspect it will be a Solzhenitsyn moment, laying in wait in their home. When the masses get wind of these events, "defense" will evolve.
What I'm doing is two-fold:
1) Removing my participation.
This is hard. You can stop voting, that's easy. You can stop "throwing your pearls before swine", abit harder for the hard-core truth seeker, but *ultimately* this means you must stop using their money. Progress here is slow, careful, and incremental.
2) Removing my dependence upon the participation of those who demand my participation.
Both harder, and yet more doable. At bare minium this means being free of debt, it means being free of "utilities" you don't control... electricity, water, sewer. Ultimately it means being free of their money, or rather, of everything you would need their money to obtain.
In the long run, this is not a choice. Independence is only possible in rural settings, and they will make that illegal. They will simply declare that people must live in 15m cities. You are "free" to "not comply", but they will cut off any services you have not already freed yourself from... banks, stores, anyone wtih a business "license".
Even in that famous WEF propaganda where "you will own nothing, and be happy", the narrator eventually lamented "those left behind", and in "1984", there is a chapter where the protagonist visits a friend and asks why he does not have a view screen. He replied that they're expensive and he didn't need one.
There *is* at least *some* hope that , if they think you're violent capable enough, and you don't start anything, they may actually leave you alone. Don't count on it. "have a plan to kill everyone in the room". Have contingencies for your contingencies. Invest in the "home court advantage", then ... stay home.
