So, if I took a child surfing in heavy weather, took a child to a rave or to midnight street racing, I would likely lose custody of that child even if the child was not injured.
Given prior events, "a reasonable person" would likely conclude that tear-gas will be deployed if your buddies are trying to breach the perimeter fence of a Federal facility.
In my universe, the parent(s) are guilty of putting that child in harms-way. Blaming ICE for doing their job is to turn the children into human shields.
Joe that is why they act out in politically and legally "safe areas " for using children as shields.

A teacher in Los Vegas asked "Why can black people say the word "nigger" but white people are forbidden?" She was fired. I will be watching with interest to see if she is also given $500k in damages.

I'd certainly question the judgement of parents who had their children the head of the line but am not that inclined to fault anyone who got gassed a couple of blocks away which is what seems to have happened to many people Saturday
ReplyDeleteWhat seems to have happened Saturday was a use of force (chemical irritants) that wasn't a reaction tailored to respond to a specific threat (with the minimum force needed) and was immediately deployed beyond the immediate perimeter of ICE's leased facility South of Downtown Portland. Surely many people here are familiar with use of force policies employed by professional police agencies or rules of engagement in a military context. I'm curious how many folks think what happened was a professional response by a well trained police force using the minimal necessity force to respond to a demonstrated threat.
I have seen consistent behavior in the area from federal agents that is far from anything approaching professional policing. The last people they shot here were during the course of executing a traffic stop while not wearing uniforms and driving rental vehicles from the airport. I'd be shocked if most people commenting here thought what the USA needs is more secret police as we understood from the other side of the iron curtain.

DeleteThe mayor is "outraged that ICE DOUSED children with tear-gas". That can only happen if the children are very close to where it is being deployed. You are describing incidental contact from a drifting cloud.
So...did the mayor lie!!! Did she deliberately embellish and exaggerate to egg citizens on?
Or is your information partial. There were children at the riots two blocks back AND there were also children in-the-scrum.
The third possibility is that the journalist twisted the mayor's words.
None of those possibilities is exactly flattering.
