Write something every day, they say...

Still here.

Mrs ERJ seems to have caught a cold and I have a tickle in the back of my throat.

We did not go to Mass today due to weather and the colds.

I also reached out to some of my experts to make next week's fiction more presentable.

I slaughtered one of our butternut squash and all of the seeds were unfilled. I don't know if it wasn't quite ripe or if the squash plant had a ploidy issue. That squash was Quicksilvers first solid food. The raw deer liver was nixed by Southern Belle.

Tomorrow night looks like it will be bad for black ice. We have about 7" of snow on the ground and it will be well above freezing tomorrow during the daylight hours and then quickly drop below freezing after sunset.

Drive safely!

  1. Hope you and Mrs. get feeling better quickly and it is not something serious. Regarding the squash I have had the same problem with my squash and pumpkin, but I attributed it to our lousy summer with a shortage of Growing Degree Days and drought. A friend gave me a long squash yesterday I have never seen before and I only got about a dozen seeds out of hundreds that I hope I can plant next year. It sure tastes good so I want to grow it. Never heard of ploidy so I'll check it out. Thanks. ---ken

    1. North Georgia Candy Roaster?
I started growing them about 3 years ago, saw the seeds at Baker Creek. Darned good squash! Stores well, too.
I buy fresh seeds especially for squash as they hybridize very easily I have been told.

  2. Sneak the baby some liver. That was the first meat my kids ate. Broccoli was another early food. They still love strong flavors, and I've cauggt them grazing on broccoli in the garden. And no, I didn't reprimand them.

  3. Also hoping you and Mrs. ERJ are feeling better soon.

An odd note, apropos of nothing: The squirrels have taken to trying to take a bite out of our pumpkins, In our 13 years here, this has never happened before. Maybe just dumb luck, maybe a bad Winter coming.

    2. Ken, we did have a hot rough summer - but there seem to be plenty of acorns left.
