There were at least two other sets of labels on the spark plug wires suggesting this is at least the third distributor cap they have seen. It is probably time to change them. Next time I am going to use different colored address labels on each wire. The numbers are just too hard to see when you are standing on your head. |
The nice thing about intermittent failures is that if you wait long enough they stop being intermittent. Then they are easy to diagnose.
Working on cars and trucks is not my favorite thing but the blue truck told me it did not want to move from the driveway. Fortunately, it was resting in the shade of a large tree.
A new ignition coil, rotor and distributor cap later and it moves down the road.

Red rust on the screws of the old rotor suggests water. Seldom a good sign in electrical equipment. |
The work had the usual amount of frustration. The replacement rotor cap had locating pins that did not match up to the holes. Mrs ERJ gave me a ride into town to get the correct rotor cap. The computer said it should fit but the computer was wrong.

There are two holes at the 9 o'clock position and two more at the 3 o'clock position. The inner holes are locating pins and the outer holes are screw holes. The first replacement part did not have the pins offset. |
Working on cars was a lot easier before I needed bifocals and when I weighed 130 pounds and was as agile as a squirrel.
