Sighting in the smoke-pole


This is not as impressive as it looks.

Due to time constraints, I have not been able to get to the range. I used what I had. I rough-sighted in the new smoke-pole at 12 yards. At least I will be on-the-paper when I get to a real range.

One of the things I noticed about the FFG Triple-7 is that it settled quite a bit in the measure when I tapped it. I threw two, 6.0cc charges to see if it was an issue. One was 72 grains by weight and the next was 75 grains. Not enough difference to be dangerous but not uniform enough to provide the best for accuracy.

I will be weighing charges and "trickling" them to 75 grains. I have 50 12x100mm plastic test-tubes coming. They are a heck of a lot cheaper than the gizmos marketed for muzzleloaders.  Read the comments.

If you can believe the ballistic calculator on the Hornady site then a 125 yard zero gives me a mid-trajectory high about 2.5 inches above the line-of-sight and I am about 3 inches low at 150 yards. That is plenty flat enough to hit a deer in the heart-lung area.

    Is FFG Triple 7 susceptible to static ignition? Do the test tubes facilitate any appreciable static?

    Yes, the test tubes are polystyrene and PS is susceptible to static.

    Dang....just, dang.

    Would glass tubes instead of plastic work? I got 10 packs of screw-top 10 ml ($8.29) and 30 ml - approx 1 fluid ounce - ($12) from the river outfit to keep Povidine Iodine in first aid kits. So far, no leaks and two of the smaller ones are in a belt kit.

      glass is an insulator as is plastic, both promote static

    Hmmmmmmmm. I’ve seen all kinds of black powder geeks throw their charges volumetrically. In fact, most makers of substitutes insist you throw your charges that way.

    I know with real black powder, I cannot discern any difference at all between weighed and volumetrically thrown powder charges. Mind you I shoot that in traditionally styled guns…
