The Upside of Mosquitoes

Mrs ERJ is what you call "an optimist."  She encourages me to look for the upside, the silver lining in the thundercloud.  We are a good team.

We have a bumper crop of mosquitoes and it has been difficult to find much good to say about them.  However, I did stumble across this story about the signaling value of mosquitoes:

Raising their hand...

An old farmer once told me that his wife had found a use for mosquitoes.

The farmer hired folks to help him during peak times for tasks like haying, pulling weeds, detassling seed corn and such.

A few of his workers would complain about the mosquitoes and he would be a smart azz and tell them that mosquitoes only bothered people when they stopped moving.

One day his wife overheard him.  She asked him why he did that.  "Basically, those folks are raising their hands and telling you that they don't want to work.  They just want to stand around and gab.  If they won't work (i.e., move) even when the mosquitoes are chewing on them, then your talking at them sure won't make them move.  We ain't paying them to stand in the shade and gab.  Fire them and hire somebody who WILL work."

Well, the farmer stopped hiring the folks that complained about mosquitoes and the crew got even more done even though they were running short.  Seems like the complainers were slowing down the workers....they weren't gabbing to themselves, after all.

  1. And B12 works to minimize their attraction to you. If you want to get rid of them, put out hummingbird feeders, they eat mosquitoes, wasps and yellow jackets!
